The
Aether
The science of 19th century has worked intensively with many different
kind of aether models[4].
The aether - in which constitution ever - was the medium, in which all
physical processes are manifested. Most of the aether models based on
fluid mechanical models. The common attribute of all aether models was a
close relationship to the physical measurable (material) world.
Therefore it is possible to call them the materialistic aether models. |

At the beginning of the twentieth century this view begun to change with
the advent of Einstein's theory of relativity[1]. The
physical concept of the aether was more and more replaced by the
mathematical concept of fields. Today fields have totally overtaken all
aspects of an aether. This can be considered as a virtual aether model,
which at the end of its development leads to the formulation of the
zero-point-field, which in turn is nothing else than a new description of the all
pervading aether.

The controversy about the existence of an aether is still alive[3].
In opposite to the traditional mechanistic aether concepts today some
alternative concepts have been proposed, which go far beyond the old
models and include the possibility for physical explanations of
phenomena, which since today only are placed in the fields of
paraphysics. A well known theory of this kind is the six dimensional quantum
field theory of Burkhard Heim[2].
